DOJO ETIQUETTE

Proper observance of etiquette is as much a part of your training as is learning techniques.  Please take the following guidelines seriously.

  • When entering or leaving the Dojo, it is proper to bow in the direction of the front of the Dojo.
  • Be on time for class! Students should arrive and be ready to start approximately 3-5 minutes before the official start of the class. If you do happen to arrive late, sit quietly in Seiza until the instructor grants you permission to join practice.
  • If you need to leave the Dojo for any reason during class, approach the instructor and ask permission.
  • The chief instructors should be addressed as Sensei and not by their name.
  • If you are having trouble with a technique, do not shout across the room to the instructor for help. First, try and figure the technique out by watching others and if you are still having trouble, raise your hand at a convenient moment and ask for help.
  • Carry out the directives of the instructor promptly. Do not keep the rest of the class waiting.
  • Remember you are here to learn and not to gratify your ego. An attitude of receptivity and humility is therefore advised.
  • Preserve common-sense standards of decency and respect at all times.
"They are human.  So am I!"
"I cannot develop my own potentialities when in the trap of self limitation"
"I must discard this self limitation.  If they practice two times , I must practice four times"
"Do not be dependant upon others for your improvement"
"Earnestly cultivate your mind as well as your body and believe in yourself"
"Karate-Do may be referred to as the conflict within yourself or a life-long marathon which can be won only through self-discipline, hard training and your own creative efforts"
